Diamonds are located all around the world, but diamonds were first discovered in India. When they were first discovered, it was believed that they were valued not for their beauty or durability but for their ability to refract light. This feature made them ideal for talismans and decorations. As time passed, the Dark ages people started believing that diamonds had medicinal value. The diamond later evolved from a medicinal object into an item of value during the Middle Ages.

Four hundred years later, the first man proposed to the lady of his dream with a diamond ring. This was Archduke Maximilian of Austria who asked Mary of Burgundy to be his wife.

Thus began a custom of proposing with diamond rings that were mainly reserved for the upper class. This was the first documented case of a diamond engagement ring.

While this was the first documented case of a diamond engagement ring, it is by no means the first engagement ring. Tradition has its roots that date back to ancient Egypt when reed rings were placed on one another’s ring finger to symbolize their betrothal. The ring finger was chosen because it was believed there was a vein in that finger that connected directly to the heart hence symbolizing love.



The first engagement rings were not cut or designed as today. In the past, they were actually a symbol of ownership not love. Women were given gold rings by their husbands, and metal ones to wear at home, to show that they belonged to their husbands. Over time this tradition’s meaning changed and is now given to express love and mutual commitment.
