Appraisal of Jewelry by renowned Gemologist , Jewelry Historian and Certified Appraiser Jinagna Sh

Appraisal entails proper procedure that is followed to evaluate your jewelry.

For appraisal, Receipt of purchase, prior appraisals, certificates should

always be provided to the appraiser along with the jewelry as this will help

the appraiser.

Appraisal of jewelry is required to determine the market value of your

jewelry. Certification of your jewelry will be done at the Gemological

Institute of America(GIA) or American Gemological Society(AGS) which are

internationally recognized. For certification, cut, clarity, color and carat of

diamonds and gemstones will be determined. At Jinas Jewels, we provide

appraisal and certification of your jewelry.

The appraisal will begin with visual observation. Any hallmarks, trade

marks, brand logo, in case of watches, dates or inscriptions will be noted.

The design pattern, color and or gemstones used will be noted as these

give an idea of when the jewelry was made as some designs belong to

specific time and trends and also where the jewelry was made including

the brand or designer that created the jewelry.

Microscope , loupe and scales are used for further evaluation.

Comparative evaluation, where the appraiser will compare the jewelry to

similar ones in the market, helps to determine the current value of the

jewelry. Additionally, appraisals are performed to determine value incase of

replacement or liquidation( for sale).

Appraisal of Gold jewelry

Gold jewelry will be tested to determine purity or karat weight. It is

performed with an electronic gold testing kit or with acid test. The gold is

rubbed on to a touchstone, acids are then applied to check the purity.

Porosity of the gold is an important aspect to be noted.

It is highly recommended to get your jewelry appraised by a certified

appraiser.

Appraisal of gemstones

Appraisal of gemstones and especially pearls requires a GIA certified

appraiser who would specialize in this area.

Shape, size, color, luster are studied. Source of the gemstone is

determined. Pearls may be natural or cultured. Any phenomenon visible is

noted.

Appraisal of gemstones is more detailed, including testing under UV light

and spectroscope.

It is highly recommended to get appraisal done from a certified appraiser.

Appraisal of Diamonds

Diamonds are graded on their cut, clarity, color and carat weight. This will

be mentioned during certification.

They are also tested with various instruments to determine authenticity.
