Sapphire is the birthstone for September. This stone, as precious as it seems, has a variety of mineral compositions that consists of aluminium oxide and small traces of elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, vanadium or manganese. When we talk about occurrence, one will notice that the two gem varieties of Ruby and Sapphire are found in the same geographical zones. This can be because of the presence of the mineral corundum. Sapphire deposits are found in Australia, Cambodia, Cameroon, China (Shandong), Colombia, Ethiopia, India (Kashmir), Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Nigeria, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, United States (Montana) and Vietnam.

Treatment

Sapphire can be treated using a variety of treatment methods. These methods are used to enhance and improve the clarity and color of the gemstone. The commonly followed practice for quality enhancement of the stone is the heating process of the natural Sapphire. The stones are heated in furnaces comprising of temperatures between 800 - 1800°C (1,470 and 3,270 °F) for several hours, or even weeks at a time. On the exposure of heat, the stones start to possess a brighter shade of blue but they lose some of the rutile inclusions.

Every colour of Sapphire is said to bring out particular wisdom. Along with restoring the body balance, the stone also has the power to align the physical, mental and spiritual planes. Strengthening of blood disorders, combating excessive bleeding and also helps strengthen the walls of the veins.
